Today SIG announced it has officially started a new company in Denmark: SIG Nordic (covering Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland). The addition of Theis Eichel, Director SIG Nordic, to our team will allow SIG to better serve our clients in the Scandinavian market. Already the first projects were started up in collaboration with some very well known Scandinavian companies.

NO INDUSTRY spends more on information technology (IT) than financial services: about $500 billion globally, more than a fifth of the total (see chart). Many of the world’s computers, networking and storage systems live in the huge data centres run by banks. “Banks are essentially technology firms,” says Hugo Banziger, chief risk officer at Deutsche Bank. Yet the role of IT in the crisis is barely discussed.

We are delighted to inform you that the Software Improvement Group (SIG) has been nominated for the Banking & Finance ICT Innovation Award 2009 for a project undertaken in partnership with KAS BANK. 

The Software Improvement Group will be giving presentations at both the 25th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM) and the Ninth IEEE International Working Conference on Source Code Analysis and Manipulation (SCAM) in September 2009.

The Amsterdam Inventor Dinner 2009 will take place on Thursday 18 June 2009 in the presence of Mayor Cohen. SIG and the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (Centrum voor Wiskunde and Informatica - CWI) will be competing against other companies and institutions for the Amsterdam Inventor Award at the Inventor Dinner.

The first four TÜV certificates were presented to KLM, ProRail, KAS BANK and Rabobank at KLM head office on 28 May. The Amsterdam-based Software Improvement Group (SIG) is the driving force behind this initiative.

The Third International Workshop on Software Quality and Maintainability 2009 took place on Tuesday March 24th. This workshop, co-located with the 13th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering, has been organised by Joost Visser of SIG and Christos Tjortjis of the University of Ioannina (Greece).

SIG has recently become a member of PON: Platform Outsourcing the Netherlands and VNSG the Association of Dutch SAP Users. Both are very professional networks where our clients and ICT suppliers meet and discuss new technologies, trends and opportunities to increase the added value of ICT in organizations.

How do I get a grip on the technical quality of software?

NEN and SIG will offer you information about standards that make it possible to get a grip on the technical quality of software. By having a grip on the technical quality, the total costs for maintenance of large software portfolios can be reduced structurally.

In the seminar on 16 April 2009 from 15.00 till 18.30 hours the content-related and practical aspects of managing software projects with regard to legal and technical quality is examined. Valuable know-how for securing great interests!

This year the organisation of the Company Elections for North-Holland received 85 applications. The Software Improvement Group is one of the ten nominated companies for the prize for the Best Company of North-Holland. In 2007 SIG was also nominated for this prize and we ended up in the top 5.

Tobias Kuipers has joined the program committee for the “Landelijk Architectuur Congres” (LAC) or National Architecture Conference. This is the premier gathering of IT and Enterprise architects in the Netherlands. The conference has been running for over ten years, and last year managed to draw an 800 people crowd. The two days of the conference are packed with keynotes, relevant industry reports, case studies, and the latest innovations from the academic world.

Benevol 2008 is the 7th edition of the Belgian-Netherlands workshop on software evolution, organized by the Technical University of Eindhoven between December 11 and 12. 

On the first of October Eric Bouwers, Technical Consultant at the Software Improvement Group, has started as part-time Ph.D. student on the "Quality Software Linguistics" project. This research-project is a collaboration between the Software Engineering Research Group of the TU Delft and the Software Improvement Group.

PhD students from various universities in The Netherlands will gather between November 22 and 28 in Nunspeet, for the Fall Days on Software Analysis. This is a PhD school organized on a half-yearly basis by the Institute for Programming Research and Algorithmics (IPA).

SIG opened its first office in Switzerland on 1 October 2006. Before the formal start date, IBM and SIG had already concluded a service contract.

The number of lawsuits filed against failing IT suppliers continues to rise. These cases usually require the expertise of a legal specialist to rationalise the dispute, enabling the courts to reach a well-considered verdict.

On Friday 23 June, the Koning Willem I Award, the Dutch National Enterprise Award, took place. This award was presented by His Royal Highness, Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

On 16 May 2006, Euroforum will be organising a seminar entitled "IT auditing 2006". Tobias Kuipers will be speaking here about: Why is there no compulsory test, similar to an MOT inspection, for IT systems?

On Thursday 23 March 2006, Tobias Kuipers spoke at the Secure Application Development seminar, organised by the "Genootschap van Informatie Beveiligers" (Dutch Informatics Society) in Bussum.

The Dutch insurance company Delta Lloyd envisaged a scenario that necessitated scrutinising the inscrutable: Cobol code hidden behind an extra programming layer. This scenario was averted by a non-invasive procedure.
